Gloucester Gig Rowers at Maritime Gloucester

When you are here in Gloucester be sure to visit Maritime Gloucester, located right downtown on Harbor Loop. Maritime Gloucester has something for everyone. You can find their website under “Things to Do” right on our Information page.

Many people do not know that there is a rowing club affiliated with Maritime Gloucester. We are the Gloucester Gig Rowers, rowing out of Gloucester Harbor and beyond in 3 “pilot gigs” and a dory. There is a very active racing component in which some of our members compete with other rowing clubs through out New England, and even as far as Scilly, England.

Every September, Gloucester hosts a rowing competition off Niles Beach in Gloucester. Last year, I am proud to say, at the ripe old age of 73, I participated in my first Gloucester Harbor rowing competition. Our boat was referred to as the “First Ladies” because we all were first-time racers and obviously all female. By the way, ages ranged from mid thirties to 73. Need I say more?

We did have to practice quite a lot to condition ourselves for this row. One of the many rewards of our practice rows, was to be rowing on the harbor just before total sunset. As they say, “a picture is worth a 1000 words”, so please enjoy these spectacular photos taken right from our boat by one of the “First Ladies,” Ann Cortissoz. If you look carefully in the second picture, you will be able to see an oar in the lower right hand corner, so I kid you not, these shots were taken during one of our rows.
